abstract="The purpose of our study was to investigate the trends in the suicide deaths in our area. The files of the Medico-Legal Institute of Timisoara were examined and analyzed for a three year period (1993-1995), with regard to rates, age, sex, marital status, means of suicide and psychiatric or somatic chronic illnesses. The rate of suicide for our area was 15,3/100000 of the population in the period that was investigated. This was higher than officially estimated for the national average. The rate of area varied widely from year to year, with small differences. We found that hanging and overdoses are more frequent means of suicide. There was a slight increase in the number of cases in the younger age groups. Those with a reported history of psychiatric illnesses were more likely to die by violent means and overdoses. We explained the slight increase rate of suicide for our area through particular socio-economic conditions and through the ethnic mixture, with different ethnic conceptions about the world and life. Social isolation, disappointment concerning the standard of life, psychiatric and somatic chronic illnesses, alcohol abuse, play a part in the suicide rates.<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
