abstract="Attempted suicide by poisoning constitutes a public health problem. During the year 1989, 1660 patients with acute self poisoning were admitted to Alexandria Poison Center. The study was conducted on forty depressed patients, twenty of them who attempted suicide by self poisoning [SA] and admitted to Alexandria Poison Center and twenty patients were non suicidal [NSA] and admitted to Alexandria Mental Hospital. The majority of SA [90%] were in the age group 15< 25 years with 1:1.5 male of female sex ratio. A significant relation was found between the mean score of Beck Depression Inventory [BDI] of both SA and NSA and the control group [F=95.989]. The mean evening serum cortisol level in depressed SA was significantly higher than both depressed NSA and normal controls [t=4.07 and 5.63 respectively]. No correlation was found between the serum cortisol level and either the total score or the four subfactors of the BDI in both SA and NSA<p /><p>Language: en</p>",
