abstract="Discusses studies on the relationship between disordered serotonin (5-HT) metabolism and manifestations of human (auto)aggression. The literature suggests a relationship between low cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in depressed patients and suicidal behavior. This diminished 5-HT metabolism has also been observed in patients with anxiety and personality disorders. It is suggested that there is also a relationship between disturbed aggression regulation and diminished central 5-HT metabolism.

METHODological shortcomings in biological suicide research, in particular problems with monoamine studies, are also addressed.
