abstract="Conducted a study of 386 suicide attempts and 45 suicides which occurred in Belgian prisons during an 11-yr span. The sex distribution of the Ss corresponded roughly to that of the prison population in general. The age distribution of suicide attemptors was also similar to that of the prison population (with highest frequencies between 20 and 35 yrs), but successful suicides were relatively more frequent in later years (40-60 yrs). The most common methods for suicide attempts were wrist-slashing, jumping from heights, hanging, and drugs, but hanging accounted for 93% of the completed suicides.

CONCLUSIONS are drawn from the data which can be helpful in improving suicide prevention in prisons.
