abstract="Problem interstate commercial drivers are not being effectively detected and controlled by Federal and State regulations and driver licensing systems. This paper highlights findings in the National Transportation Safety Board's &quot;Safety Effectiveness Evaluation of Detection and Control of Unsafe Interstate Commercial Drivers Through the National Driver Register, State Driver Licensing Policies, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.&quot; It points out that even though motor carriers are required to do certain driver investigations, there is no single source they can utilize to obtain a nationwide accounting of driver records. Safety Board-recommended changes to the National Driver Register, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, as well as State adherence to the one-license concept are explained. Selected accident investigations are used to provide real world examples of the problem.<p />",
