abstract="We are now in transformation from a nation of belt sitters to a nation of belt users.  We are also going to start phasing in passive restraints, both belts and airbags. These are going to be big changes and there is no clear answer as to where all of this change is going to lead us in terms of future safety needs and occupant restraint designs.  To take a look at what is ahead, this article describes some of the various types of passive belt systems and presents some Ford Motor Company projections of injuries and fatalities as safety belt use increases.<p />",
