abstract="As in the United States, work concerning road safety is done in Europe on three levels: research, standardization,and regulations. These three levels should, in principle, remain distinct and be approached in that order. Unfortunately, this is not always the case and important overlapping does happen. As, in Europe, there only remain a few big car manufacturers, and national markets are limited, a steadily greater importance is given to international harmonization. Although the cars of European make only represent a small percentage of the USA car population, this harmonization is not only worth wishing for within Europe, but should also exist in relation with the United States. For this reason, I will start by mentioning the international bodies actively or potentially concerned with protective devices, at the different levels mentioned above. The second part of my paper will refer to some European countries.<p />",
