abstract="It is basic that the more freedom an individual has to flail around in a car or fall or be thrown out of the door or windshield, the greater his chance of injury. The limitations of the lap belt only, are these-while the individual is held at the hips, the upper torso can extend itself, as a result of the tremendous forces generated in a crash, towards the dash, onto the steering column, or possibly part way out of the door. A properly designed and installed lap belt-shoulder harness combination can contain the upper body and prevent this mobility. We have made such a unit for approximately seven years; however, promotion of the lap belt only has been difficult, and this combination would presumably be more so.<p />",
