For years, I have avoided using the forbidden phrase emergency room in polite company for fear that I would be viewed as some type of vermin in the house of emergency medicine. More recently, the realization that everyone outside our profession thinks of us very favorably as ER docs (thanks, in part, to Anthony Edwards, Eriq LaSalle, et al) has begun to soften this linguistic taboo....
