%X The role that the elderly (persons over 65 years of age) play in maintaining a safe and adequate blood supply through preoperative autologous blood denotation is chronicled. Tenets that have historically prohibited the use of homologous donor blood for persons in need of transfusion therapy is examined from the African- American perspective. Attempts are made to dispel certain myths that African-Americans have about transfusion practices. Predicated on the proverbial directive-In all labor there is profit, But mere talk leads only to poverty (Proverbs 14:23)-recruitment strategies are recommended that encourage the African-American elderly to participate in autologous blood programs.<p />
