%X There is an alarming increase of dementia among elderly populations. Victims and their families will seek care in institutions traditionally designed to minister to the chronically infirm elderly. Such facilities currently use diagnosis as the single most important criterion in determining eligibility for admission. This strategy is unreliable, not only because dementia is frequently misdiagnosed, but also because diagnosis itself cannot accurately predict behavior. A more reliable technique involves examining in detail the behavior and current functioning of a demented individual to properly assess appropriateness for admission.<p />
