%X One survey done in 1975 has revealed that out of about 17,000 km of JNR lines, more than 700 km suffer from mud pumping. In those areas, the drainage after rainfall is poor, and the bearing capacity of the subgrade heavily declines with a progressive sinking of the track. This article presents some examples of mud pumping on these tracks as well as methods for improvement such as provision of center drainage, increase of ballast thickness, protection of subgrade surface with interposed layers and construction.<p />
