%X The role of the driver's motivational state in fatigue-related decrements has been largely neglected by researchers. Some findings on the topic indicate that de-motivation in the fatigued driver may account for fatigue-related impairments when the demands of the driving task are low -- impairments in lateral control of the vehicle are most evident when driving on a straight road. The findings of the present study have clear implications for in-vehicle countermeasures to fatigue. Such countermeasures should seek to raise the fatigued driver's level of intrinsic motivation since fatigue acts to reduce the driver's interest in the driving task.<p />
