%X A computer-based method and an interactive computer facility have been developed for the investigation of fault propagation in process plants, including fault tree synthesis and alarm system design. The modelling of fault propagation is described in a companion paper. This paper describes fault tree synthesis, while the interactive facility is described in a further, complementary paper.<p />
