%X Analysis of a representative at-the-scene sample, and also a retrospective study of serious injury accidents, is used to establish the pattern of damage configurations in injury producing accidents. Suggestions for improving frontal impact testing are made on this basis, and an important conclusion is that the 1/4 overlap offset barrier test should be adopted. Some observations concerning barrier design and impact testing of occupant contact areas are also made.<p />
