These factors argue in favour of effective, focused treatment in the paediatric population. Tricyclic antidepressants, which are known for their beneficial effect on adults, have never demonstrated more than a placebo effect on children and teenagers. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors demonstrate a significant therapeutic benefit in the majority of studies when set against placebos. They are better tolerated that tricyclic drugs and less toxic in the event of overdose. We give a rundown of the pharmacokinetic data, the results of clinical tests and the prescription modes of the different antidepressants used in problems of paediatric depression.
