%X The article describes the ongoing impact biomechanics research programme currently being supported by the Commission of the European Communities. The six principal research themes are listed, as is the background history and the reasoning leading up to the start of the programme in late 1978. The projects are briefly described, in terms of gaps in knowledge detected, research methodology, and expected results.<p />
