The Government of India is actively pursuing policies to promote private sector involvement in order to address capacity constraints and deficiencies in the existing transport infrastructure. The private sector involvement is also sought in the development of transport infrastructure and services. The focus of this paper is the experience in involving the private sector in transport development in India. The paper provides a broad overview of government policies and various initiatives that have been undertaken to promote private participation following various models. Also discussed are achievements made in different subsectors and some conclusions are drawn of major policies and initiatives by the Government.
