N2  - It is ironic that social scientists admonish one another to integrate empirical studies into bodies of theory and to fill the gaps in their empirical knowledge at the same time that they take inadequate steps to facilitate the mechanical progress that must precede these creative tasks. This article suggests a punch- card system for establishing order in the bibliographical wilderness of the ex panding social sciences.<p />
