For many Germans the accident at the Chernobyl power station posed the psychological problem of dealing with anxiety. The author argues that anxiety is a rational response to the invisible dangers of atomic technology. Its ration ality can be specified by Sigmund Freud's explanation of the uncanny and Gunther Anders' call for a measure of anxiety that adequately meets the nuclear threat.
