TY - JOUR PY - 2009// TI - Unpacking the Relationship Between Gender and Fear of Crime: Explaining Why There Are Similarities and Differences JO - Journal of contemporary criminal justice A1 - Lane, J. A1 - Fisher, Bonnie Sue SP - 260 EP - 263 VL - 25 IS - 3 N2 - Erskine (1974) and Clemente and Kleimen (1977) were among the first researchers who were interested in understanding the distribution and determinants of fear of crime. The Reactions to Crime project researchers (Baumer, 1978; Baumer & DuBow, 1977; Gordon & Riger, 1989; Skogan & Maxfield, 1981) investigated the impact of crime and fear on urban dwellers. Skogan and Maxfield explored sources of fear of crime, and the relationship between fear and individual and neighborhood reactions to crime. Their work was among the first to address the paradoxical relationship between women’s and older person’s low victimization rate and heightened fear of crime.
