N2  - This paper presents an analysis of road safety in Greece, a country which has the highest fatality rate of the original 15 European Union (EU) members. Additionally, Greece remains among the lowest in terms of roadway safety for the complete set of 27 member countries- a fact attributable, the author notes, to insufficient efforts from government authorities and citizenry. However, it is noted that, between 1996 and 2006, yearly traffic fatalities decreased from 2,157 to 1,675. There was also a noted decrease in traffic accidents in general. This is attributable, the author explains, to enforcement intensification within the country’s first road safety strategic plan. Data collected are presented including information calculated according to a variety of demographics- drivers, passengers, pedestrians, driver ages, driver genders, and location of accident.<p />
