N2  - About 15,000 babies have participated in infant aquatic programmes in Norway since swimming classes for infants and toddlers started in 1979. This article reviews the historical development of infant swimming, describes how it is practised today, and discusses physiological reactions and positive effects on the psychomotoric development of children, as well as potential risks.
