The initial statistics describe the magnitude of the problem--that a woman who is battered is at high risk for being murdered at the hands of her spouse or partner. The cycle of violence, the reasons for staying in such a dangerous environment and the profile of the battered woman are also discussed. The unique experience of the battered African American woman will be incorporated throughout this paper as will be an overview of assistance for battered women. Finally, conclusions and implications for future research are presented.
