N2  - During emergency braking situations, particularly on road surfaces that are wet and slippery, a driver may be able to maintain directional stability and control over steering by properly using an anti-lock braking system (ABS). While safety features such as ABS are sometimes promoted as road safety improvement 'silver bullets', global research involving thousands of drivers suggests there is widespread and dangerous ignorance about what ABS actually does. The author presents an overview of typical vehicle ABS, disadvantages of ABS use, including differences in brake activation between ABS and non-ABS, and tips for ABS best practice use. Information on online resources on ABS, as well as a detailed print review on ABS research, is provided by the author.<p />
