N2 - Measures of traffic safety have improved substantially during the past two decades. However, more than 40% of all fatal collisions still involve alcohol, and the risk of being detected when driving while impaired remains very low, despite law enforcement efforts. This paper discusses enforcement strategies and research results intended to increase opportunities for law enforcement officers to detect and arrest impaired drivers. Driving while impaired detection, sobriety checkpoints, and specific patrol tactics are addressed.<p />
