TY - JOUR PY - 2010// TI - Surgical considerations in the management of combined radiation blast injury casualties caused by a radiological dirty bomb JO - Injury A1 - Williams, George A1 - O'Malley, M. SP - 943 EP - 947 VL - 41 IS - 9 N2 - The capacity for surgical teams to respond appropriately to the consequences caused by the detonation of a radiological dirty bomb will be determined by prior knowledge, familiarity and training for this type unique terrorist event. This paper will focus on the surgical aspects of this scenario with particular emphasis on the management of combined trauma-radiological injury. The paper also describes some of the more serious explosion-contamination incidents from nuclear industrial sources, summarizes learning points and parallels taken from these scenarios in relation to subject of a radiological dirty bomb and describes the likely radioactive substances involved.
