These crutches are usually designed without any scientific base. In reality, the weight and height of the person plays an important role in designing such proper crutch weight which will help to improve the proper locomotion. In the present study, a simple mathematical model relating to Height (H), Weight (W) and Weight of Crutch (C) is presented. It is proposed that the relation. HW = 4 C Gives optimum crutch weight from ergonomics points of view for a given H and W. This relation is validated by different case studies made in various institutions for the orthopaedically handicapped in India.
