N2  - Suicide is a devastating event and a major public health issue. On average one person dies every 2 hours in England as a result of suicide. It is the commonest cause of death in men under the age of 35 years. This article reviews the epidemiology, causal factors and prevention of suicide, and also briefly discusses the role of audit in this area.
