TY - JOUR PY - 1993// TI - Restructuring the European defence industrial base JO - Defence economics A1 - Walker, William A1 - Willett, Susan SP - 141 EP - 160 VL - 4 IS - 2 N2 - Against a background of profound change in the international security environment the domestic conditions of supply and demand in the defence market have altered irrevocably, forcing defence ministries to reconsider their relationships with the domestic defence industrial base while simultaneously compelling defence production towards greater internationalisation. In this context the paper examines the emerging European defence market, evaluates the IEPG's attempt through its “Action Plan” to open up European defence procurement to market forces through its policy of “juste retour” and assesses the response of national defence industries to this policy. Finally, it concludes with some remarks on the problems of controlling the arms trade and the diffusion of military-related technology in the wake of the Gulf war.
