N2  - This research examines the relationship between work status (working and retired) and the degree of organizational articipation among elderly males in their sixt~es. A nat~onal proba- !ility sample of 322 elderly respondents provided the major data source. Elaboration model was used to analyze nine control vari- ables: work status of spouse, marital status, occupational status, family income, satisfaction with health, size of kinship network, race, and size of community of residence. Working tended to in- crease participation in the organizations. When the effects of family income are controlled the relationship between work status and orga- nizational participation reduced significantly. However, controlling for occupational status, satisfaction with health, anomia, size of community of residence, work status of spouse, marital status, kin- ship network, and race did not significantly alter the relationship between work status and the degree of organizational participation among elderly males.<p />
