N2  - The experiences of sexual abuse of 15 girls with mental retardation were explored using semistructured interviews. Participants were selected from the National Center for Mental Health—Women and Children Protection Unit (NCMH-WCPU) in Manila, Philippines. Findings revealed that (a) the girls experienced adaptive difficulties that were confounded by their sexual abuse experience and impoverished conditions; (b) most sexual offenders were familiar people; (c) disclosure did not come easy for the victims; (d) sensitivity of caregivers encouraged early detection of abuse; (e) special consideration in terms of diagnosis of trauma is necessary; and (f) financial cost discouraged legal solutions. These findings are discussed in relation to the effectiveness of protection programs for adolescents with mental retardation in the Philippines.
