TY - JOUR PY - 1978// TI - Mobilopathy. the obscure plague of the Twentieth Century JO - Journal of traffic medicine A1 - Grossman, AM SP - 2 EP - 6 VL - 6 IS - 1 N2 - Pathogenetic Kinesia is the medical terminology for a Disease of motion. Mobility, like motion and movement, has been identified as the Fifth Life Support Line essential for survival. Two forms of this disorder exist. The first is Kinesiopathy: defects of motion due to disorders of self-induced motor behavior. The second and most serious is Mobilopathy: a Disease of suffering due to motion by assisted transit modalities. The automobile, as the major form of transportation in the United States, causes more deaths and disabilities in children than any other disease. Between the ages of 15-24 years it destroys more young people than all diseases and accidents combined. It is the fourth leading cause of death in all age groups. Despite epidemiological factors uncovered by statistical measurements in medicine which expose Mobilopathy as an epidemic or plague, few preventive measures have been developed for alternate systems of transit. The medical profession, recognizing Mobilopathy as a disease, must act to use the medical measurements of transportation hazards for preventive action as did our predecessors in eliminating the plagues of infectious diseases. There is no denial that the automobile is a convenient personal form of transit and has in the U.S.A. created an economy and purported progress: however, our medical conscience, aware that the hazards are deadly and far outweigh the benefits, must speak out for the prevention of the plague of Mobilopathy.
