The constant reduction in the number of dead and injured on the roads is one of the primary objectives in our society. Even though the absolute number in West Germany fell by 11,202 or 58.4 percent since 1970, it is quite clear that considerable further improvement potential can and must be found. Additional education, training and information, especially for young drivers, supported by further vehicle- and traffic-related improvements could help to realize a lower death-rate, despite the increasing traffic density. The German motor manufacturers were and will be committed with all their engineering know-how to entail a continuous improvement in vehicle safety.
