This study compared recidivism rates over a two year period following a drunken driving conviction of 8938 offenders divided into four groups; (a) individuals sentenced to 1 to 4 weeks in an inpatient facility, (b) individuals placed on a weekly, face to face monitoring program for a period of 1 to 2 years, (c) individuals assigned to neither of these programs and (d) individuals assigned to both treatments. Offenders sentenced to the inpatient facility or the monitor program or both demonstrated significantly lower recidivism rates than those not receiving either of these treatments. Differences in recidivism were most pronounced among the first time offenders.(A)
