2778 consecutive casualties from accidents of all types from French hospitals are studied in this paper. The sample comprised three times as many men as women. The highest blood alcohol concentrations were found in men especially when unemployed; on week-ends and at night; in fights, traffic accidents and domestic accidents. Serum gamma glutamyltransferase (ggt) was more often elevated in our sample than in the general population, and especially so when blood alcohol concentration was high. These findings suggest that acute and chronic intoxication both play a role in the genesis of accidents.
