TY - JOUR PY - 1993// TI - Correlates of detection of injured drinking drivers JO - Journal of traffic medicine A1 - States, John D. A1 - Good, R. G. A1 - Lillis, R. P. SP - 147 EP - 152 VL - 21 IS - 4 N2 - Analysis of patient records and driving histories of drivers admitted to hospitals as a result of non-fatal injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes indicated that over 70% of drivers known to be legally impaired at the time of their crash had no record of a DWI/DWAI conviction resulting from the event. Even when police accident reports specified alcohol as a contributing factor, fewer than half of the impaired drivers were convicted. Impaired injured drivers who were convicted had significantly shorter lengths of stay in the hospital, had higher mean BALs, were more likely to have injured another person, and were more likely to have crashed at night.
