TY - JOUR PY - 1986// TI - Behavioral and cognitive data: A note on the multiplexity of network subgroups JO - Social networks A1 - Johnson, Jeffrey C. A1 - Miller, Marc L. SP - 65 EP - 77 VL - 8 IS - 1 N2 - This paper is concerned with the social network utility of cognitive data obtained by having people judge the similarity of other people without investigator-specified criteria. Substantively, we focus on networks of Alaskan salmon fishermen as derived from two sets of behavioral data (one pertaining to patterns of co-residence, another revealing patterns of economic exchange), and one set of cognitive data. These data are analyzed for multiplexity in network subgroupings. Findings show that, in this instance, a cognitive measure of similarity splits the difference between two categories of behavioral data. Implications of this for social network research are discussed.
