A1 - Kudzia, WJ SP - 231 EP - 241 VL - 5 IS - 3 N2 - This paper deals with one type of energy-absorbing crash barrier--the Fitch Inertial Barrier System. To date, Connecticut has installed the Fitch Barrier at 35 locations throughout the state. The original 15 locations required no site preparation and were installed by the State Maintenance Forces. Installation costs for these locations ranged from $1550 to $2925, including labor. Maintenance costs for hits recorded to date have ranged from $320 to $1365. Twenty new installations have been recently completed, all requiring considerable site preparation. Installation costs for these locations averaged $1710 and site preparation costs averaged about $5200. Barrier performance in Connecticut has been good. Data collected thus far shows that the lives of 8-10 drivers have been saved. Information gathered from unreported accidents indicates that the barriers have probably saved many more.
