TY - JOUR PY - 1998// TI - Airport uses technology to speed construction JO - American city and county A1 - Couret, C. SP - 28 EP - 28 VL - 113 IS - 8 N2 - As part of an airport expansion project, the San Francisco airport commission is constructing a 2.5 million sq ft (232,250 sq m) international terminal with 25 gates, a $450 million addition to the Airport Rapid Transit System, and a new connection to the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. The commission has employed the use of several computer aided design (CAD) and three-dimensional (3-D) technology programs to aid in the expansion project. New software allows the designers to work with large files and review multiple designs at the same time, highlighting different elements in each. Past programs required 10-15 minutes to open a drawing; now turnaround time is 1-1.5 minutes, giving designers more functional hours in the day. The commission is also using MapGuide technology, which allows users to share and coordinate information between different consultants on an Intranet system.
