TY - JOUR PY - 1999// TI - City tests stability of light poles JO - American city and county A1 - Couret, C. SP - 17 EP - 17 VL - 114 IS - 15 N2 - Engineers in Alexandria, Virginia, were shocked when one of the city's traffic signal poles toppled over during routine maintenance. They decided to start testing the city's remaining light poles to assess their stability. Most of the poles were more than 20 years old, making them likely hosts for corrosion. Over 2 days, engineers used a vehicle to apply a slowly increasing force to each of the poles and discovered that two needed immediate replacement. Test results for the remaining poles were used to establish a preventive maintenance and replacement schedule for the next few years.
