TY - JOUR PY - 1997// TI - Icy warning JO - APWA reporter A1 - Roberts, L. SP - 10 EP - 11 VL - 64 IS - 10 N2 - A recently developed pavement ice detector system is currently able to recognize the presence of even a microscopically thin ice film which might contribute to loss of tire traction. The system, which has been developed by Visitron, utilizes a pneumatic technique to sense the ice buildup and provides an immediate real-time warning to motorists. The system is robust, low in cost and can operate unattended in remote locations. The new system is ideally suited for areas of sporadic ice formation to provide a positive warning to drivers whenever surface ice is actually present. This system can operate on an unattended basis and is totally self-contained. According to its developers, it uses uncomplicated sensing techniques, which are easy to install and maintain while being inexpensive and reliable.
