N2  - This article describes steps that can be taken through the Quiet Zones framework to reduce railway noise in communities where it is unwanted. The 110-decibel horn used by trains is an exceptional safety device, primarily due to its sheer volume. However, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has recently accepted that such volumes can also be a nuisance and so have made provisions for grade crossings where horns will not be sounded pending the proper implementation of Supplementary Safety Measures (SSM) at these Quiet Zones designated areas. The following four elements are integral to such a designation: nighttime closure from ten to six, four-quadrant gate systems, gates with medians, and converting two-way streets to one-way streets. Wayside horns may also be used for SSM. The article also provides seven steps towards designating a FRA-approved Quiet Zone.<p />
