N2  - AB The Pit River Bridge over Shasta Lake near Redding, California, is a 64-year-old steel-trussed design that supports a concrete upper deck for motorists and a lower deck that carries Union Pacific Railroad trains. In 2005 an investigation by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) found signs of structural failure on the bridge. This article describes two main challenges to repairing it: the first was how to protect railroad tracks and the lake below which is popular with boaters; and the second was how to warn drivers of potential backups due to construction work. The first problem was solved by the construction and placement of a separation structure. The second required an educational outreach campaign to warn travelers during the holidays of back-ups at the construction site.<p />
