N2  - This article details how the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) coordinated the repair of the freeway ramps that burned and collapsed on April 29, 2007 when a tanker truck driver lost control and plowed into a wall of the Interstate 880 connector. Predictions were that the affected freeways would be closed for weeks while repairs were undertaken. The freeway interchange, known as The Maze and located near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, is one of the most heavily traveled in the San Francisco Bay Area, and months of gridlock were expected. Instead, a week later, the project was finished and traffic was back to normal. Caltrans engineers teamed up with private contractors to remove the rubble, restore structural integrity to the girders, and replace the collapsed upper deck.<p />
