TY - JOUR PY - 2010// TI - Grade-crossing Safety JO - IEEE vehicular technology magazine A1 - Ku, Bih-Yuan SP - 75 EP - 81 VL - 5 IS - 3 N2 - Official statistics have shown that the majority of grade-crossing accidents in Taiwan were caused by intrusion of road users violating the right-of-way of the railroad. Therefore, it is critical that additional measures be developed to prevent or mitigate the seriousness of intrusion incidents even though many warning facilities were already in place. In this article, the author proposes the use of a real-time crossing cite image, instead of alarm signals, to provide train drivers with more vital information. In addition, it is also suggested that radio-link capacity be taken advantage of to display numerical information of train distance on the fly to deter potential intrusion attempts. The recommendations of this article can be used as a reference design for the augmentation of grade-crossing safety of railroad systems facing similar intrusion problems.
