N2  - Less attention has been paid to reducing road traffic accidents in developing countries, particularly Africa, than in developed countries. The economy of southern African countries (Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe) is outlined. Statistics on road traffic accidents in southern Africa are presented. Methods for costing road traffic accidents are discussed. The costs of road traffic accidents in southern Africa were determined using the general (sensitisation) method. The southern African region lost US$ 54 billion worth of developmental resources due to road accidents between 1980 and 1999. The implications for the development of the region are considered.<p />
