SP - 41 EP - 48 VL - 5 IS - N2 - Human spatial orientation is facilitated predominantly by sensory information from the visual and vestibular systems. Any disorder in these sensory organs or associated neurophysiology may lead to loss or distortion in orientation. In normal human locomotion, such disorders are often noticeable in unsteady gait or ataxia. In automobile driving there is evidence to indicate that even minor disorders in the visual-vestibular systems may cause inadequate movement perception, which can induce incorrect vehicle control and increase the risk of a serious crash. The purpose of this study was to examine the direct influence of vestibular disorders on vehicle driving performance while in the safety of an automobile simulator facility.
