A survey explored the relationship between situational variables, personality (relational competence) variables, and two outcome variables (perceived control and depression) that increase the risk of child abuse. Among parents identified as at risk for child abuse, loneliness and the lack of feedback regarding one's parenting behavior predicted decreased control and increased depression. Control and depression were more consistently predicted, however, by personality (relational competence) variables (e.g., shyness, assertiveness, emotional control, and empathy). Results suggest that counseling efforts with parents at risk of child abuse should include an assessment of personal and social competencies that influence one's ability to access, construct, and maintain support networks.
