N2  - <p>Research on adult substance abusers has revealed a number of social and psychological differences between males and females that have important implications for treatment. Thus far, little attention has been paid to such gender differences in etiology, referral, and treatment among adolescent substance abusers. Data from 930 adolescents in treatment for substance abuse were analyzed to help clarify differences between male and female adolescent substance abusers. Several implications for understanding adolescent substance abuse and treatment are advanced.</p><p />
